Description:
Reporter returns to his hometown of Florida to investigate a case involving death row inmate.
Review:
The PaperBoy (2012) *** (out of 4) Lee Daniels adaptation of Peter Dexter novel look at some junk swamp and a mystery surrounding them. Communicator Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) returns to his hometown to try and solve the mystery behind a sheriff who was killed. Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) has been on death row for the crime, but the reporter believed he was innocent and drag his younger brother (Zac Efron) and a worthless woman (Nicole Kidman) in the case. Runner is a fairly unpleasant to look like a bunch of characters who can not help but hate and its funny to see McConaughey actually changing the image and years earlier Killer Joe. I think the best thing about the picture is the performances and really feel that director Daniels brings to the picture. The biggest problem is the screenplay and a story I just felt it was not all that convincing. The whole mystery surrounding what actually happened to the sheriff to take a back seat and it really just seems to come and go at times. Im really not sure why it was thrown into the background so much, especially in turns to come to the end. With the twists Unless think that the filmmakers wanted the story itself to be important, but it never really takes off. It also seems that the director wanted to shock the viewer with some rather graphic violence and sexual situations, where the stars have some pretty wild things. It really seems that the film is not just the accumulation in each of the scenes and its fair to say they are pretty memorable. Presenting the entire cast is excellent with both McConaughey and Kidman do wonders with their character swamp waste. I think both of them are incredibly believable and hats off to them as far as they did. I was also impressed by Efron and thought he handled the character development anyway. Cusack was awesome playing the creepy bad guy and we have a strong support of David Oyelowo, Scott Glenn and Macy Gray. The cinematography is also good as the music quality and the environment. Runner, as it is a great showcase for the stars, but you can not help but feel she is a lost opportunity if a stronger story made it even better.
